Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Preparation Checklist

It is hard to think clearly during an emergency so the last thing you want to do is to realize during a storm that you forgot something. Use this checklist to help gather

essential items and prepare today for what might happen tomorrow. Now is the time.

Know your risks:

  • Although Papillon is not in a flood zone during extended periods of heavy rain, water may enter your home. Be prepared to place water barriers where needed. When a hurricane is imminent watch for public announcements for sandbag locations. You can also order flood barriers from Amazon. These tubes can be filled with water using an ordinary garden hose.
    • Move any items from your courtyards which may become a flying projectile during high winds. Should you be away have these items moved prior to leaving.
    • Report any unaddressed hazards to a board member.

Have the following items ready:

  • Have nonperishable foods available such as canned meats, peanut butter, energy bars and dried fruit.
    • Have a water supply. Allot one gallon per person per day for seven days
    • Fill your bathtub with water for cleaning purposes.
    • Have disposable plates, cups, paper towels, utensils, and a can opener
    • If you have a gas grill, be sure the gas tank is full. Use any alternate cooking sources outside.
    • Should you have a portable generator have sufficient fuel and only use outside.
    • Be sure you have sufficient first aid supplies.
    • Fill your gas tanks.
    • Be sure your cell phone is fully charged. Portable chargers are helpful. Amazon has several solar powered chargers at reasonable prices.
    • Have several flashlights and/or battery-operated lanterns on hand with spare batteries. Costco has a set of small battery-operated lanterns which will light up a small room. Buy extra batteries.
    • A hand cranked or battery-operated weather radio
    • Get cash. During power outages ATMS will not work.
    • Have a supply of your medications, hearing aid and batteries.
    • Place all your important papers in waterproof containers. If you have the resources scan your important documents onto a flash drive
    • Make a list of of important phone numbers. Keep them on your cell phone and post a list on the refrigerator and in your car.
    • Do not forget food and medications for you pets.
